Rhea Chakraborty was arrested on September 9 by the Narcotics Control Bureau.

Bombay:

Whether Rhea Chakraborty, jailed on drug-related charges in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, will be released on bail is likely to be decided by the Bombay High Court today. The actor and his brother Showik have been in jail for almost a month on drug-related charges linked to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput in June.

A special court yesterday extended their custody until October 20.

Rhea Chakraborty was arrested on September 9 by the Narcotics Control Bureau for drug organization for Sushant Singh Rajput, a popular movie star who was found dead in her Mumbai apartment on June 14. She was accused of being “an active member of a drug syndicate” and financing drugs purchased for Sushant Singh Rajput, her boyfriend.

In her bail application, Rhea Chakraborty alleges that Sushant Singh Rajput “took advantage of her relatives to maintain her drug use” and that she and her brother are the only targets of a witch hunt.

She says he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and his family abandoned him during the height of his depression. His mental health “deteriorated during the lockdown,” she claims, adding that the deaths of actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor also had a huge impact on him.

Sushant Singh was “extremely happy after being offered 14 crore rupees for a movie,” she said, alleging that the actor was bothered by a breakup with his family, especially his father.

Rhea Chakraborty also maintains that the charges against her are too severe for the amount of drugs involved. She accuses the drug investigation agency of falsifying a false account that she was involved in illicit drug trafficking and “harboring offenders”.

The CBI is investigating the circumstances of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death and the Law Enforcement Directorate is investigating the financial allegations raised by the actor’s father.

The Narcotics Control Bureau entered Sushant Singh Rajput’s investigations when WhatsApp chats retrieved from Rhea Chakraborty’s phone revealed alleged conversations involving the purchase of drugs.

Several prominent players have been interviewed by the anti-drug bureau in an expanded drug and film industry investigation.
