The World Health Organization announced on Friday that it would set up a World Center for Traditional Medicine in India, with Prime Minister Narendra saying he was convinced that just as the country has become the ‘pharmacy of the world‘, the he WHO institution will become the center of global well-being.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement in a video message during an event where PM Modi inaugurated two future-ready Ayurvedic institutions in Jaipur and Jamnagar via videoconference on the occasion of the 5th Ayurveda Day.
The Ayurvedic Educational and Research Institute (ITRA), Jamnagar (Gujarat) and the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur (Rajasthan) are the two leading Ayurveda institutions in the country .
The Jamnagar Institute was granted the status of Institution of National Importance (INI) by an Act of Parliament, and that of Jaipur was designated as a Reputed University Institution (De novo category) by the University Grants Commission (UGC), according to the AYUSH ministry.
“I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to open a WHO Global Center for Traditional Medicine in India to strengthen data, research, training and awareness in traditional and complementary medicine,” said Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“This new center will support WHO’s efforts to implement the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023, which aims to help countries develop policies and action plans to strengthen the role of traditional medicine as part of their journey to universal health coverage and a safer world, ”he said.
Prime Minister Modi said Ayurveda is the legacy of India whose expansion involves the well-being of mankind and all Indians will be happy to see that the country’s traditional knowledge makes others prosperous countries.
“It is a matter of pride for all Indians that the WHO has chosen India to establish its World Center for Traditional Medicine. From now on, work will be carried out in this direction from India,” said the Prime Minister. Modi.
“I would like to thank WHO and in particular its Director General Tedros for entrusting this responsibility to India. I am convinced that just as India has become the pharmacy of the world, in the same way, this center of traditional medicine will become the center for global well-being, ”he said.
The ministry of AYUSH, since 2016, observes every year the “Ayurveda Day” on the occasion of Dhanwantari Jayanti (Dhanteras).
Considering the current COVID-19 situation, the 5th Ayurveda Day, 2020 is largely observed on virtual platforms nationally and internationally.
