Geneva, Switzerland:

The World Health Organization said on Monday that it will send a team to China next week to investigate the source of the virus that sparked the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The United Nations health agency has been pressing China since early May to invite its experts to help investigate the animal origins of the new coronavirus.

“Knowing the source of the virus is very, very important,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a virtual briefing.

“We can fight the virus better when we know everything about the virus, including how it started,” he said.

“We will send a team to China next week to prepare for this and we hope it will help us understand how the virus started.”

He did not specify the composition of the team or the precise composition of its mission.

Scientists believe the killer virus has passed from animals to humans, emerging in China late last year, possibly from a market in Wuhan selling exotic animals for meat.
