Geneva:

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a record number of confirmed cases of coronavirus recorded worldwide in the past week – nearly 2 million infections – the highest number in a single week to date.

“From September 14 to 20, there were almost 2 million new cases of COVID-19, which is a 6% increase from the previous week, and the highest number of cases reported in a single week since the start of the epidemic. During the same period, there has been a 10 percent decrease in the number of deaths, with 36,764 deaths reported in the past seven days, “WHO said in a situation report Monday evening.

In particular, an increase in the weekly incidence rate of cases has been reported in all regions over the past seven days except Africa, with the two Americas remaining the most affected areas and accounting for over 38 % of all new cases reported during the period last week.

At the same time, Europe has posted the largest increase in the number of deaths over the past week, with an increase of 27% from the previous week.
