Some political parties engage in too much politics on the issue: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata:

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday that people in areas affected by Cyclone Amphan at “99%” have received the compensation announced by her government, and that only a few of the “poor” have not yet obtained it.

His remarks came amid continuing protests over alleged failures in the distribution of monetary compensation to those whose homes were damaged in the cyclone that ravaged the state in mid-May.

Part of the victims and the opposition parties allege that many TMC leaders and their relatives were compensated even though their homes were not damaged by the cyclone.

Some “small errors” may have occurred in a few places during the administration’s efforts to speed up the compensation payment process, said Banerjee, adding that she had ordered officials to recover the money that had gone to the wrong people and redirect it. to real seekers.

“Please provide compensation money to those who have been deprived. There is not much but only a few. Please provide them with what they should have received. 99% people have already received compensation, “said the chief minister. after a cabinet meeting.

“Because we tried to be quick, some small mistakes happened in some places because of some people. There will be no compromise. No one has the power to deprive victims of what they should get it, “said Ms. Banerjee, who is also said to be the supremo of the Trinamool Congress.

Some political parties are engaging in too much politics on this issue, she said.

The state government has released a total of 6,800 crore rupees as compensation for those whose homes were damaged by Cyclone Amphan.

More than 10 lakh people received 20,000 rupees each to help repair their homes. The government has received about 40,000 complaints alleging irregularities in the distribution of this financial assistance and has found that nearly 34,000 of them were genuine, according to an official.

Such complaints have been received from the districts of Purba Medinipur, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Howrah.

The state government froze the bank accounts of several people who received compensation even though their homes were not damaged by the cyclone.

About five block development workers were challenged by the state government while several leaders of the Trinamool Congress in these districts were suspended for their alleged involvement in these irregularities.
