New Delhi:
First-time MPs Sasmit Patra and L Hanumanthaiah are among six MPs nominated by Rajya Sabha Speaker, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, for the House Deputy Speaker’s panel.
Bhubaneswar Kalita and Surendra Singh Nagar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), L Hanumanthaiah of the Congress, Vandana Chavan of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sukhendu Sekhar Ray of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Sasmit Patra of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) are the deputies nominated by Naidu for the panel.
The president of Rajya Sabha appoints six deputies from among the members of the House for the panel of vice-presidents.
In the absence of the President and the Vice-President, one of them presides over the Chamber.
When appointing panel members, the chair usually takes into account the strength of the various parties in the House and may also consult with their leaders.
At present, there is no vice president after the retirement of Janta Dal-United MP Harivansh. The new vice-president will be elected from among the membership.
However, as Harivansh has been re-elected to the House, he is expected to be nominated again for the NDA candidate for the post.
