Mike Pompeo alleged that Pompeo alleged that the PLA was engaging in provocative military action.

Washington:

Affirming that there can be no compromise between freedom and authoritarianism, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rejected the argument that one must ease tensions and simply accept one more Chinese Communist Party (CCP) more belligerent.

“My message today is as follows: we must work together to continue the transatlantic awakening of the Chinese challenge in the interest of preserving our free societies, our prosperity and our future. It will not be easy,” said Mr. Pompeo in response. to a question during his participation in the Brussels Virtual Forum 2020.

“It is tempting for many, especially in our business community, who make money in China to say that we have to calm the tensions and simply accept an increasingly belligerent CCP. This is nonsense. ‘do not accept this argument,’ said Pompeo.

“There is no compromise between freedom and authoritarianism. I do not want the future to be shaped by the CCP, and I would bet no one on this appeal wants that either,” he said. he says.

As such, Pompeo announced that the United States had accepted the proposal to create a US-EU dialogue on China.

“I am excited about this new mechanism to discuss the concerns we have about the threat that China poses to the West and our common democratic ideals,” he said.

“My invitation to American friends in Europe is to defend these values in our time, so that they will shape the world for the good in the future, as they have done in the past. We will defend these values together”, a he declared. .

In his remarks, Pompeo alleged that the People’s Liberation Army was engaged in provocative military actions.

“They understand his continued aggression in the South China Sea, deadly border clashes in India, an opaque nuclear program and threats against peaceful neighbors,” he said.

The CCP has broken several international commitments, including those to the WHO, the WTO, the UN and the people of Hong Kong, he said.

He also talked about the CCP’s predatory economic practices, such as trying to force nations to do business with Huawei, which it said was an arm of the Chinese Communist Party’s surveillance state.

The Chinese Communist Party is also violating European sovereignty, in particular by hitting companies like HSBC head on.

“The United States is not forcing Europe to choose between the free world or the authoritarian vision of China. China makes this choice between freedom and democracy,” he said.

Acknowledging that the United States has been slow to recognize the reality of the rise of the authoritarian regime and its implications for free society, he said that Europe too was slow. “But the CCP’s concealment of the coronavirus, an epidemic that started in Wuhan, China – which has now killed tens of thousands of people and hundreds of thousands of people around the world – I think it has accelerated the wake up everyone, “he said.

“Europeans, like Americans, are starting to find their voice. The Commission and the External Action Service identified China as a” systemic rival “last spring – a very important recognition,” he said. , adding that the Lithuanian intelligence services ” National Threat Assessment identified China as a potential threat for the first time in 2019, and did so again here in 2020.

The G7 condemned China’s national security law targeting Hong Kong, he said. “I also really appreciated the way the EU called China for its disinformation campaigns around the pandemic,” he said.

These are not just words, he said, noting that the new inter-parliamentary alliance on China is gaining momentum as the United Kingdom takes a strong stand against the CCP’s intention to crush autonomy. from Hong Kong and the Czech Republic leading the charge. encourage countries to adopt the principles of secure and clean 5G networks.

“Obviously, there is a transatlantic awakening to the truth of what is going on. Concerns are rightly growing over the CCP’s exploitation of multilateral organizations as well. To give you one example, the Chinese leaders of the “The International Telecommunication Union and the International Civil Aviation Organization have taken advantage of their positions to advance China’s narrow interests,” said Pompeo.

Certainly, the United States and many friends of the free world have differences on the subject of multilateralism, he noted.

“But we can all agree that these institutions must be anchored in democratic values, take account of their missions and reflect the interests of all member states,” he said.
