Washington:

The United States, the country hardest hit by the coronavirus, recorded 66,528 new cases on Saturday, a record for a period of 24 hours, according to a count of Johns Hopkins University.

The country has now registered a total of 3,242,073 infections, the Baltimore-based university said in its latest data at 8:30 p.m. (00:30 GMT Sunday).

The number of deaths rose to 134,729, with an additional 760 deaths counted.

The United States has registered more than 60,000 new cases daily in the past four days.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump donned a face mask in public for the first time, finally yielding to intense pressure to lead by example in public health.

Trump wore a dark mask with the presidential seal as he passed through the Walter Reed Military Hospital outside Washington to meet injured veterans.

According to reports this week, collaborators have practically begged the president to give in and wear a mask in public – and be photographed – as coronavirus cases soar in some states.

These include Florida, where Disney World reopened two of its four Orlando theme parks on Saturday, while the state reported 10,360 new infections and 95 deaths.

Saturday’s visitors had booked their tickets in advance, allowing Disney to control the number of people in the park and adapt to social distancing.

Visitors had to undergo temperature checks and a hand sanitizer was widely available.

Disney said it imposed a social distance of six feet (two meters) at attractions and inside stores.
