Orange, Texas:
President Donald Trump visited Hurricane Laura-affected areas in Louisiana and Texas on Saturday, receiving briefings on emergency operations and relief efforts.
“One thing I know about this state, it is rebuilding itself quickly,” Trump said at a rally that included Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, US lawmakers and federal agency officials. Trump did not meet with the residents.
The massive storm hit Louisiana early Thursday with winds of 150 miles per hour (240 km / h), damaging buildings, chopping down trees and cutting power to more than 650,000 people in Louisiana and Texas. Laura’s storm surge, however, was much lower than expected.
The Category 4 hurricane killed at least 15 people, some of whom were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning due to unsafe operation of the generators. Governor Edwards called Laura the most powerful hurricane to hit Louisiana, even overtaking Katrina, which was a Category 3 storm when it struck in 2005.
Trump told officials, referring to those who were lost, “That’s a huge number, but you thought it could, could have been, much worse.”
Trump signed a declaration of disaster for Louisiana on Friday.
He also met with National Guard personnel in Louisiana to assist with relief efforts and then flew to Orange, Texas to meet with officials.
After meeting with officials in Lake Charles, Trump said “come here guys, I want some power,” and started autographing pieces of paper. He gave one to a court officer and said, “Sell this tonight on Ebay, you’ll get $ 10,000.”
