Washington:

US President Donald Trump on Saturday promised to appoint a successor, possibly a woman, to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg “very soon”.

“We will have a candidate very soon,” he told reporters in Washington, adding: “It would probably be a woman.”

Ginsburg, a progressive icon and opponent of Trump, died on Friday at the age of 87. His death gives the president the opportunity to rock the bench of nine Supreme Court judges firmly to the right for decades with a conservative 6-3 majority. .

“We want to respect the process and the process will evolve, I think it will move quickly actually,” Trump told reporters.

Ginsburg’s death comes just weeks before the Nov. 3 presidential election, offering Republicans a chance to lock in a Tory majority in court.

Only two female judges remain on the court: Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, both progressives appointed by former President Barack Obama.

Trump told reporters he would likely pick a replacement.

“I think I could say that – it would be a woman.” If anyone asked me now, I would say a woman would be in the first place, yes, choosing a woman, I would say, would definitely be appropriate, “he said.
