Cleveland:

Republican US President Donald Trump defended his swift readiness to try to fill a seat on the US Supreme Court at the start of his first presidential debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden on Tuesday, saying “elections have consequences” and that he had the right despite Democratic objections.

“I’m going to tell you very simply that we won the election, the election has consequences. We have the Senate and we have the White House and we have a phenomenal candidate respected by all,” Trump said in defense of his candidate, the Conservative Judge Amy Coney Barrett. .

Biden, speaking of Trump’s frequent interruptions, said the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat should be filled after the Nov. 3 election, when it was clear who the president would be.

“We should wait, we should wait and see what the outcome of this election will be,” Biden said, adding that a more conservative Supreme Court would endanger the affordable care law known as Obamacare.

Trump is moving swiftly to occupy the Ginsburg seat in hopes of consolidating a 6-3 Tory majority on the ground, a key priority for social conservatives.

Democrats argued Republicans were hypocritical for moving quickly to take the seat because they blocked then-President Barack Obama’s nomination to the Supreme Court in 2016, arguing he should wait until after the election of November.

Trump repeatedly interrupted Biden as he attempted to answer questions, which prompted Biden at one point to intervene: “Do you want to shut up, man?”

With over a million Americans already voting early and time is running out to change their mind or influence the small group of undecided voters, the stakes were high as the two White House candidates took the stage five weeks before on polling day.

The two suitors did not shake hands as they entered the debate, adhering to protocols on social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Biden, 77, has always been ahead of Trump, 74, in national opinion polls, though polls in the battlefield states that will decide the election show a tighter competition.

The 90-minute debate, with a limited in-person audience and socially remote due to the pandemic, took place at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, with Fox News‘ Chris Wallace as moderator. This is the first of three scheduled presidential debates and a vice-presidential debate.

Organizers said there were around 80 people in the audience, including family members of candidates, campaign staff, hosts, health and safety officials and journalists.

Fuel Trump and the more low-key Biden debated an array of pressing political challenges, including the pandemic that has killed more than 200,000 people in the United States and left millions out of work, protests for racial justice, as well than the battle for The Supreme Court.

Hours before the debate, Biden released his 2019 tax returns and his campaign called on Trump, who has been criticized for not releasing his statements, to do the same.

Biden took the plunge two days after the New York Times reported that Trump paid just $ 750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017 – and none in 10 of the previous 15 years – after years declaration of significant losses of commercial enterprises.

Trump had long sought to keep his personal financial records a secret.

Biden’s taxes showed he and his wife Jill paid over $ 346,000 in federal taxes and other payments for 2019 on income of nearly $ 985,000 before claiming a refund of nearly $ 47,000 they said they paid too much to the government.
