Washington, United States:
A U.S. federal judge on Sunday evening ended a political ban by the Trump administration on downloads of the popular TikTok video app, hours before it went into effect.
District Judge Carl Nichols issued a temporary injunction at the request of TikTok, which the White House has called a threat to national security, alleging that its Chinese parent company is linked to the Beijing government.
The notice was sealed, so no reason for the decision was published in a one-page order by the Washington court.
The Trump administration’s order sought to ban new downloads of the app from midnight (04:00 GMT Monday) but would allow use of TikTok until November 12, when all use would be blocked. The judge denied TikTok’s request to suspend the November 12 ban.
