New Delhi:
The repeated waivers of Vikas Dubey have resulted in great suffering in Uttar Pradesh, India’s Chief Justice SA Bobde said today, referring to the arch-criminal who killed eight policemen who had gone to the capture last month. Despite 64 cases, including murder, kidnapping and extortion against him, Vikas Dubey was at large.
Highlighting the fact, the chief justice today denied a man’s bail, observing that Uttar Pradesh is suffering because Vikas Dubey, despite 64 cases against him, has been repeatedly released on bail .
“You (the petitioner) are a dangerous man … you cannot get out on bail,” CJI Justice SA Bobde said.
“See what happened in the other case (meeting with Vikas Dubey). UP is suffering because someone with 64 cases has been released on bail,” added India’s chief justice.
Vikas Dubey was killed last month, caught after a seven-day manhunt following the Kanpur police team’s ambush before dawn. Police said he was shot while trying to escape the custody of the police team transferring him from Ujjain to Kanpur.
His death and Kanpur’s murder will be investigated by a panel headed by a Supreme Court judge. “Leaving Dubey on bail is the most important factor to investigate and this has led to all of these consequences,” the Supreme Court said.
At a previous hearing, Judge Bobde told the UP government that it was “appalling” that the gangster had been out of prison for so many years.
The case and subsequent allegations of a link between the local police and the Vikas Dubey gang have had political repercussions.
Opposition leaders, including Congress and Trinamool Congress, have raised questions about the “goonda raj” in Uttar Pradesh during the BJP regime.
Prior to the national elections, anarchy was one of the major problems reported by the BJP.
