Kanpur:

Uttar Pradesh gangster Vikas Dubey, the main accused of the cold-blooded murder of eight police officers, was warned by police on Sunday of a raid on his complex by a local police officer, Daya Shankar Agnihotri, a alleged accomplice.

In addition, data retrieved from Vikas Dubey’s mobile phone indicated the names of 20 police officers. There was evidence of constant contact with at least two police officers, including one from the Chaubeypur police station; the village of Bikru, where the meeting took place, comes under its jurisdiction.

“He (Vikas Dubey) received a phone call from the police station before the police came to arrest him. After that, he called about 25 to 30 people (and they) shot the police,” said Agnihotri, arrested earlier today after being shot in the Kalyanpur area, police said.

“I was locked inside the house at the time of the meeting, so I saw nothing,” he added.

Vinay Tiwari, the senior officer of the Chaubeypur station, was suspended and questioned, announced the ANI news agency.

“At the time of the meeting, he fled the meeting site. If he had faced the criminals, the situation could have been different,” Mohit Agarwal, Inspector General (Kanpur Range), told media.

The telephone warning enabled Dubey, who had already been charged in more than 60 murder, kidnapping, extortion and riot cases, to assemble henchmen armed with AK-47 assault rifles and to prepare a death trap for a large team of police.

Eight police officers, including an assistant police superintendent, were killed. Seven others were injured.

The information raised disturbing questions about police spies helping criminals like Vikas Dubey, who has now escaped arrest for more than 50 hours.

Kanpur police chief Mohit Agarwal issued a strong warning to all police, telling GalacticGaming that tough action will be taken against cops guilty of helping criminals.

Police recovered a sport utility vehicle (SUV), a Ford EcoSport, in the Auraiya district of the UP. The car is registered with an Amit Dubey and it is determined whether Vikas Dubey used this car to escape. It is suspected that Dubey fled to Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan; UP police contacted the two states.

Over 25 police teams have been assembled to capture Vikas Dubey and more than 100 locations have been searched in the past 48 hours.

“Wanted” posters have also been placed at checkpoints along the Indo-Nepalese border. The cash reward for the information leading to his arrest was doubled to 1 lakh rupee, with the assurance that the identity of the whistleblower will be kept secret.

The network of spies helping Vikas Dubey, politically connected, can also extend to the Shivli Power substation in Kanpur. ANI quoted an operator, Chhatrapal Singh, saying that on July 3, he received a phone call from Chaubeypur station to “cut the power in the village of Bikru”; it was the day of the raid.

Vikas Dubey’s criminal record started in 1990 with a murder case. In 2001, he was charged with the murder of Santosh Shukla, a BJP chief from Kanpur who was chased and shot inside a police station. Dubey “surrendered” in 2002 but was acquitted.

A criminal with political connections, he was also a member of a political party in the past, and his house and cars were demolished and destroyed by the Kanpur district authorities on Saturday.
