LONDON:
The British Minister of Health on Wednesday hailed the use of a steroid called dexamethasone to treat coronavirus patients as the best news to date of the epidemic.
The results of trials announced Tuesday showed that dexamethasone, which is used to reduce inflammation in other diseases such as arthritis, has reduced death rates by about a third among the most COVID-19 patients. seriously ill admitted to hospital.
“It dramatically increases your chances of survival,” Health Secretary Matt Hancock told Sky News. “This is one of the best news we have had during this whole crisis.”
“It reduces your chances of dying when you use a fan,” said Hancock. “This is great news for everyone.”
He said the drug’s potential had been spotted for the first time in February and that in March positive signals came for the government to start buying it in April.
He stated that the R rate was less than 1 in all regions, but did not say whether he was talking about England or the whole of the United Kingdom.
Hancock also praised English soccer player Marcus Rashford – whom he wrongly called “Daniel Rashford” – for successfully campaigning for the government to change course and provide school feeding vouchers to families in difficulty during summer vacation.
“I have been called a lot worse in the past two days,” Rashford said on Twitter in response to the minister’s error.
