London:
The British cybersecurity agency on Thursday accused a hacking group which, it says, “almost certainly” operates within the framework of the Russian intelligence services for having attempted to steal research on possible vaccines against coronaviruses.
The National Cyber Security Center said that attacks by the APT29 group were underway but that targets so far included British, American and Canadian vaccine research and development organizations.
“The NCSC believes that the APT29, also known as Dukes or Cozy Bear, almost certainly operates within the framework of the Russian intelligence services,” he said, adding that the United States and Canada shared this view. .
Foreign Minister Dominic Raab expressed outrage at the findings, which were released alongside an opinion on how organizations can protect themselves from cyberattacks.
“It is completely unacceptable that the Russian intelligence services are targeting those who are fighting the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.
“While others pursue their selfish interests with reckless behavior, the United Kingdom and its allies continue the hard work of finding a vaccine and protecting global health.
“The UK will continue to counter those who carry out such cyberattacks and will work with our allies to hold the perpetrators to account.”
NCSC said government, diplomatic groups, think tanks, health care and energy are primarily targeted, with the aim of “stealing valuable intellectual property”
