Cyclone Nisarga weakened in the evening and bypassed Mumbai, sparing the city from damage

Mumbai:

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said on Wednesday that the resilience demonstrated by people and officials had helped “ease the intensity” of Cyclone Nisarga amid the COVID-19 crisis.

After hitting land near Alibaug with winds reaching up to 120 km / h in the afternoon, the cyclone weakened in the evening and headed northeast of Maharashtra, sparing Mumbai and other regions.

Thackeray said losses have been reported on the Konkan coast and in some other regions. He said orders had been issued to conduct on-site inspections to assess the damage from the cyclone.

“The unity demonstrated by the people will help get Maharashtra out of all the crises,” the chief minister said in a statement.

He also expressed his sorrow over the two deaths reported by the state due to incidents related to the cyclone.

“Thanking all those who protected Maharashtra with Mumbai against cyclone Nisarga which had flown over Maharashtra at a time when the State is already grappling with COVID-19. But we have all repelled it. The intensity of the crisis “said the chief minister.

He said the state could not thank enough its municipal officials, district governments, the disaster management authority and medical teams for their work during the cyclone crisis.

“No one can resist the fury of nature, but Maharashtra is united and strong in the face of the crisis and the cyclone has shown it. This unit will help us to get the State out of all crises,” said Mr. Thackeray.
