Twitter reported a tweet from Donald Trump on Sunday in which the US president claimed he was immune to the coronavirus, claiming he was violating the social media platform’s rules on misleading COVID-19 information.
“Full and complete approval from the White House doctors yesterday. That means I can’t get it (immune) and I can’t give it. Very good to know,” Trump said in the tweet.
The post was posted by Twitter with a disclaimer.
“This Tweet violated Twitter’s Rules Regarding the Dissemination of Misleading and Potentially Harmful Information Related to COVID-19,” said Twitter’s disclaimer, adding that it has determined it may be in the public interest that the tweet remains accessible.
A Twitter spokeswoman told Reuters the tweet made “misleading health claims” about COVID-19 and that engagements with the post would be “considerably limited”, as is the norm in such cases .
Trump said on Sunday that he had fully recovered from COVID-19 and would not pose a transmission risk to others, releasing him again to hold large election rallies in the final weeks of the race to the White House.
The president first announced that he had tested positive for the coronavirus on October 2. Trump’s doctor said on Saturday that the president had taken a test showing he was no longer contagious.
Scientific evidence is unclear on how long people who have recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies and are protected from a second infection.
Trump, who follows Democrat Joe Biden in opinion polls ahead of the Nov. 3 election, is eager to return to the campaign trail after an absence of more than a week.
He plans to visit the key battlefield state of Florida on Monday, followed by rallies in Pennsylvania and Iowa on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
