Washington:

Twitter said on Tuesday it had removed a video retweeted by President Donald Trump in which medics allegedly made false claims about the coronavirus pandemic, after Facebook took similar action.

“The tweets with the video are in violation of our COVID-19 disinformation policy. We are acting in accordance with our policy,” a Twitter spokesperson said, declining to give details of how many people had watched the video .

The video was also deleted by Facebook on Monday evening, a company spokesperson said, explaining that the footage shared “false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19.”

The video, which shows a group of doctors claiming masks and locks were not necessary to stop the disease, was watched by 14 million people on Facebook before being deleted, according to the Washington Post.

Doctors have also supported the use of hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug that has not been proven effective against COVID-19.

Shortly after his removal from Facebook, Trump tweeted several clips from the video to his 84 million subscribers.

The Post said Trump also shared 14 tweets defending the use of hydroxychloroquine.

Twitter has started to act against Trump’s tweets which he says break their rules.

In June, the social media platform withheld a tweet threatening to use “serious force” against protesters in Washington, claiming it was breaking the rules on abusive content.

The latest moves have intensified the battle between the White House and the social media companies Trump has accused of bias against the Tories, despite his own backers.
