Washington:
The condition of US President Donald Trump has been “very worrying” over the past 24 hours, a source close to his health said on Saturday, adding that the next 48 hours would be critical.
“The president’s vital signs over the past 24 hours were of great concern and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of care. We are still not on a clear path to full recovery,” the source said.
The assessment contradicts the more optimistic picture presented by Trump’s medical team, who said he was breathing well without oxygen and improving.
In the first official update on the president’s condition since his admission to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday, medics were optimistic about his progress.
“At the moment, the team and I are extremely pleased with the progress the president has made,” White House doctor Sean Conley said, adding that the president had been “fever-free for over 24 hours.”
“We monitored his heart function, his kidney function, his liver function. It’s all normal,” added Sean Dooley, another member of Trump’s medical team.
Conley bypassed reporters’ questions about whether Trump received oxygen treatment at some point before revealing the president was not on oxygen on Thursday or at any time since joining Walter Reed.
He said Trump was “only 72 hours from the diagnosis now” – implying he was known to be ill a day before his test result was announced.
But the White House later clarified that Conley intended to say Saturday was the third day since the president’s positive test result Thursday night.
Shortly after Trump arrived at Walter Reed’s home, Conley said in a memo that the president was starting drug therapy in remdesivir and was given an eight-gram dose of an experimental cocktail of polyclonal antibodies.
Conley would not put a “definitive date” on Trump’s discharge from hospital or disclose the president’s temperature.
