A Congressional activist from Trinamool was killed and two others injured when unidentified men opened fire on them in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, a senior police official said on Thursday.

Dharamveer Nuniya died instantly after being shot by two men around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Two of Mr. Nuniya’s companions were injured in the attack. A search to stop the attackers was underway, the officer said.

A local TMC leader ruled out any political angle in the incident, but insisted that those responsible be punished.

BJP leadership, however, claimed the incident was a consequence of a factional feud over the sharing of loot in the Coal Belt.
