London:
TikTok has had discussions with the British government over the past few months to locate its headquarters in London, said a source familiar with the matter, as part of a strategy to distance itself from its Chinese property.
London is one of many sites the company is considering, but no decision has been made, the source said.
It was not immediately clear which other places are being studied. But he aggressively hired in California this year, including poaching Kevin Mayer, a former executive at Walt Disney Co, to become the general manager of TikTok. He is based in the United States.
TikTok faces scrutiny in Washington over suspicion that China may force the company to hand over user data. TikTok belongs to the Chinese company ByteDance.
The source said the company has largely focused on its problems in the United States for the past few weeks, but has not ruled out London as a potential location for its new headquarters. TikTok is expected to “dramatically” increase the size of its workforce in London and other key locations outside of China over the next few years, the source said.
The Sunday Times reported that hTiktok had interrupted talks with the British government to open a global headquarters in Britain.
A source said that Tiktok was still in talks with the British government.
