Seoul, South Korea:
The hugely contagious and repetitive children’s song “Baby Shark” became the most-watched YouTube video on Monday, with more than seven billion plays.
A bane of parents and teachers around the world, the South Korean-produced song has grown from the realm of kids’ YouTube to a worldwide viral sensation, with a catchy and addicting tune supported by a hypnotic and colorful video.
“Baby Shark Dance”, the English version of the song, recorded more than seven billion views on YouTube around 04:00 GMT Monday, dethroning Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” as the most-viewed video on the platform.
The ubiquitous children’s song and earworm, first uploaded to YouTube in June 2016, is a remix of an American campfire song from Seoul-based production company Pinkfong.
Her YouTube success paved its way in the global music charts, reaching No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2019.
It has attracted many adult fans along its journey to viral worldwide fame: The Washington Nationals baseball team took it up as an anthem and won the World Series last year, prompting the White House playing music during the celebrations.
One American city played the song on repeat, while another, West Palm Beach, Florida, used the melody to try to discourage homeless people from congregating in a public space.
He was also pushed into an anti-pandemic ward, with a coronavirus-themed version, “Wash Your Hands,” teaching children the importance of personal hygiene.
Two of the last four tracks to hold the most played record on YouTube are South Korean – rapper Psy’s megaahit “Gangnam Style” held the title for over three years until he was dethroned by “See You. Again ”by Wiz Khalifa.
