New Delhi:

The world is moving towards new balances of power and interests, which will manifest in a more multipolar world architecture, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday.

Addressing the 2020 Asian Leaders Virtual Conference on “Emerging Geopolitics and Economic Landscape in Asia”, Jaishankar highlighted India’s common interest in working for a multipolar Asia and said that with integration of Central Asia into the world economy, the world now a “truly multipolar world“.

The theme of the conference was “Emerging Geopolitics and Economic Landscape in Asia” and Mr. Jaishankar noted that in a world already under stress, the coronavirus pandemic has been “an additional and really serious complicating factor”.

He said many countries have broadened their definition of national security accordingly. “Likewise, there is a stronger sense of strategic autonomy with a greater emphasis on resilient supply chains,” Jaishankar said.

Mr. Jaishankar noted that the theme of the conference was “not only indicative of our changing times but highly appropriate, given the integral link between geopolitics and economic changes on our continent”.

“Indeed, these two developments are reflected in two key phenomena that drive current global politics: globalization and rebalancing. Both had their own consequences and reactions. But feeding off each other, they offer an explanation for much of what is happening in our contemporary world. ,” he said.

The minister said that we are moving towards new balances of power and interests no doubt. “Nor is the reality that this will manifest itself in a more multipolar global architecture.”

“Recent events suggest that the accompanying frame of mind will put multilateralism under pressure. We don’t all want this, although actions rather than words speak of intentions. If the old order is eroding and a new order has not yet appeared, we are probably heading for a long transition. It will be characterized by convergences between powers and working methods to give this practical form. Intermediate powers will likely have a larger role and regional solutions may have more space to unfold. New concepts and mechanisms will coexist with those that have led to more heated discussions among all of us, ”he said.

Speaking on steps India is taking to tackle the economic situation amid the COVID-19 pandemic, EAM said like the rest of the world, India is also focusing on recovery and resilience.

“Our economic figures for September and October are encouraging and we are confident they will only improve. However, we believe now is also the time to embark on ambitious reforms that would put us on a higher trajectory. Some of them have already done so in the fields of agriculture, labor, education and energy.

“Recognizing the importance of job creation, the emphasis on ease of doing business has increased further. As a national strategy, we are aiming for an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Autonomous India), which would expand its capacities to make a greater contribution to the world economy. We want to do India, and do for the world. “
