Chennai:
Amid the delay and drama of the vote count in the US presidential elections, thousands of miles in India, villagers in the ancestral village of vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris anxiously await the election results.
Special prayers were held at the village of Thulasenthirapuram in Tamil Nadu, the ancestral home of Kamala Harris’ diplomat maternal grandfather PV Gopalan, who she says had a great influence on her as a child.
Many houses like the one in Vijayalakshmi, in the village, had their televisions hooked up to the Tamil news channels which reported the hotly contested US elections. The farmer’s wife who hosted reporters reporting on the village’s ties to Kamala Harris, as her personal guests, told GalacticGaming: “We are so proud of her. We want her to win ”.
Posters with photos of the Democratic vice presidential candidate have been plastered around the village to wish her success.
Tuesday there was even a special puja at this temple. Kamala’s recent contribution to the temple dedication has made it more expensive now.
The temple inscription also has Kamala Harris’s name engraved in addition to those of many other donors, acknowledging his contribution of Rs 5,000 in 2014.
“She is the granddaughter of someone born here. We are so proud. She would someday become the president of the United States,” said N Krishnamurthi, a retired bank executive.
A few miles away, Sashtika and her family follow every electoral turning point in the United States. For her, Kamala is a huge inspiration. “As a woman, I feel inspired that if we work with precision and diligence, we can reach great heights,” she said.
Born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, Ms. Harris positions herself as an American of color striking a chord with African-American and Indo-American voters.
She had previously shared her love for idli, “a very good sambar” and “all kinds of tikka”.
Kamala Harris’ Indian debate doesn’t mean much to people here. She may not have visited this village, but many are proud of her and see her as a potential American president in the making who they believe would make history.
