Washington:

The United States, the country hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has recorded 59,747 new cases on Sunday in the past 24 hours, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University.

The number of cases in the United States has exploded in recent weeks, hitting a record 66,528 in 24 hours on Saturday.

The country has now registered a total of 3,301,820 infections, the Baltimore-based university said in its latest data at 8:30 p.m. (00:30 GMT Monday).

The number of deaths was 135,171, with an additional 442 deaths counted.

The increase in the number of cases has forced some state governors to withdraw from previous efforts to reopen their economies, with some now adopting masks.

The administration of President Donald Trump again insisted Sunday on a full reopening of schools in the fall despite the resurgence of COVID-19 infections.
