The stage is ready for the election of the only Rajya Sabha seat in the Mizoram, which will today attend a triangular competition.
The ruling National Mizo Front (MNF) presented the party’s national central committee member K Kanlalvena as a candidate in the biennial elections, while the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Congress appointed B Lalchhanzova and Dr Lallianchhunga respectively.
Mr. Lalchhanzova is the secretary general of the ZPM (front-end manager) while Dr. Lallianchhunga is the spokesperson and chairman of the media department of the State Congress.
In the Mizoram Assembly, made up of 40 members, the MNF has 27 members, the ZPM seven, the Congress five and the BJP has one deputy.
Voting will take place at the Assembly secretariat between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. today.
Assembly Commissioner and Secretary H Lalrinawma, who is also Rajya Sabha’s returning officer, said the count will take place today, perhaps starting at 5 p.m., after receiving permission from the Election Commission.
He declared that the poll will be held in accordance with the rules of social distancing in accordance with the directive of the Election Commission to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
“We have sent a written appeal to all lawmakers to wear masks and gloves before going to the polling station,” said Lalrinawma on Thursday.
He said thermal scanning will be done near the entrance to the voting center as a security protocol.
There will be two medical teams at the Assembly secretariat where an isolation room has been set up in the event that someone becomes ill during the ballot.
According to Mr. Lalrinawma, a postal ballot will be used if a voter does not show up because of illness.
Friday, other officers and staff of the assembly secretariat, who are not involved in the electoral process, were invited to work from their homes.
