The governor of Ladakh discusses the economic growth program with an industry body (representation)

Leh:

The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur, discussed on Tuesday a program of economic development in eight points with industry body CII with emphasis on road connectivity in all weather and the revival of the tourism sector, which contributes nearly 50% to the economy of the region.

Mathur also suggested a joint conference CII and army to encourage the development of new businesses, in addition to a joint conference CII-Iceland-UT to develop tourism and geothermal energy in Ladakh, said a spokesman official.

He said the growth of eight-point program focused on connectivity and infrastructure, taking advantage of the tourism potential, harnessing solar energy, agriculture and livestock, education and skills development , focusing on industries based on innovation, providing affordable health care and sustainable development.

Speaking at a meeting with representatives of the ICI by videoconference, the lieutenant governor said that with the expertise of the ICI economy, knowledge of new ideas and initiatives can be introduced in Ladakh.

Speaking of connectivity and infrastructure, Mathur suggested that the ITC should address the issue of the pass Zojila nationally and stressed that the pass Zojila should be a national program.

“What the army of the Indian Air did for Ladakh is phenomenal. However, road connectivity to 12 months would have avoided the problem of a Herculean airlift that our forces are since 1947,” he declared.

The Zojila Pass along the Srinagar-Leh national highway of 434 km attracts heavy snowfall during the winter, forcing the closure of the road for months together every year.

Commenting on deformation caused in the tourism sector because of attacks Pulwama last year and pandemic Covid-19 this year, LG Mathur said that Ladakh’s economy was severely affected, tourism contributing nearly 50% to the Ladakh economy.

He stressed that the ITC proposed initiatives to enable the tourism industry to manage these long-term influences.

Speaking of unconventional energy, Mathur said the prime minister Narendra Modi had called a “ Ladakh carbon free ”.

“This should involve the development of hydrogen sectors and non-conventional energy,” he said, adding that the Solar Energy Corporation launched tenders for 5,000 MW and 14 MW of power solar.

“Despite the repeated extension of the tender, the industry has not advanced,” said the lieutenant governor and suggested the ITC to find ideas to ensure that the boot sector.

Addressing the issue of contractors as highlighted by Nawang Thinles, CII, Ladakh, Mathur said the CII can help local government to encourage the registration of MSME units.

He said that since the region has a military presence that requires maintenance and spare parts and if Ladakh can develop these industries, it can be beneficial for everyone.

“A joint conference of the IIC and the Army may be useful to identify specific contributions and encourage the development of new businesses,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor also suggested that the CII is organizing a joint conference CII-Iceland-UT to develop tourism and geothermal energy in Ladakh.
