The Bombay High Court requested details on the state of the ouadwans.

Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court has asked the Maharashtra government for details on the health of HDIL promoters Rakesh Wadhawan and Sarang Wadhawan, arrested for money laundering in the multi-crore fraud case of PMC bank.

The court also asked in which barracks of Mumbai-based Arthur Road Prison they were detained.

Judge Bharati Dangre heard petitions tabled by promoters of Housing Development and Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL), Rakesh Wadhawan and his son Sarang Wadhawan on Tuesday, requesting bail for medical reasons.

The petitioners also claimed that there were no adequate facilities in the prison due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

In addition to the health of the Wadhawans and the details of the barracks, Justice Dangre also asked the state government what measures he had taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among prisoners.

The prosecution will need to know the applicants’ position regarding their state of health, their placement in the barracks as well as the measures taken to keep the prisoners safe from the COVID-19 pandemic, the court said.

He released bail requests for a new hearing on June 12.

The suspected fraud at the Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank (PMC) was exposed in September 2019 after the Reserve Bank of India discovered that the bank had created fictitious accounts to hide more than 4,355 crore from Rupees loans granted to HDIL, almost bankrupt.

According to RBI, PMC bank masked 44 problematic loan accounts, including HDIL, allegedly altering its basic banking system, and the accounts were only accessible to a limited number of staff.

The economic crime wing of the Mumbai police and the law enforcement branch later recorded crimes against senior bank officials and Wadhawans.
