New Delhi / Jaipur:
After a week of heated talks, protests and exchange of letters between Raj Bhavan and the state government of Rajasthan, Governor Kalraj Mishra agreed to call an assembly on August 14 on Wednesday. Earlier, the governor questioned the government’s third proposal, which insisted on the July 31 date mentioned earlier.
Mr Mishra said there appeared to be no compelling reason to call a session without 21-day notice due to the coronavirus outbreak, unless the government wanted to hold a vote of confidence. In that case, a brief session with all safety measures, including social distancing, could be arranged, he said.
Meanwhile, President CP Joshi filed a new petition to the Supreme Court against the High Court’s order regarding the disqualification notices to Sachin Pilot and his camp of rebel MPs. Sources told GalacticGaming that the president will not press for an immediate hearing and that the case is expected to be heard next week. Senior lawyer and Congress chief Kapil Sibal will represent the president in court.
Here are the live updates on the political crisis in Rajasthan:
Just two days after the petition challenging the Rajasthan High Court’s interim order to maintain a status quo – which he said helps Mr Pilot – was withdrawn, President CP Joshi was back in the Supreme Court.
This time, the President called on the high court to curb the High Court’s “indiscipline” which he said violated the Supreme Court’s Kihoto Hollohan judgment.
The High Court acted in “flagrant judicial indiscipline and judicial irregularity” in seeking to reopen settled issues decided by a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, according to the petition. The High Court, she added, cannot rule on a Supreme Court verdict.
