The Center has released 1,000 rupees crores to the government of West Bengal, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and a Union government team will visit the state soon to assess the damage caused by the cyclone. Amphan.
Rescue and relief operations in West Bengal were discussed on Monday during a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), chaired by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba.
As announced by the Prime Minister after his aerial investigation and the examination of the rescue efforts with the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, a sum of 1,000 crores of rupees has already been released to the state government, said a statement.
The Interior Ministry will soon send a team to the state to assess the damage from the cyclone, he added.
Continuing coordination efforts and restoration measures in the areas of West Bengal affected by “Amphan”, the NCMC met for the fifth time in connection with natural calamity.
The Chief Secretary of West Bengal thanked the Center for the support provided to relief and restoration.
The restoration of electrical and telecommunications infrastructure was considered a priority in the areas of the State affected by cyclones.
While telecommunications connectivity has been restored in most regions, damage to the local electricity distribution network has affected the restoration of full supply in some regions.
Central agencies are deployed in these efforts, as well as teams from neighboring states, the statement said.
The army has also been brought into service in Kolkata to help clear roads, alongside teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force.
Taking note of the progress made in the restoration works, the secretary of the cabinet indicated that complete electrical connectivity, the telecommunications service and the drinking water supply must be restored as a priority.
Central agencies are ready to provide any additional assistance the state may need. Sufficient stocks of food grains have been kept ready for supply.
The cabinet secretary also suggested that the West Bengal government could indicate its additional needs, if any, and ordered officers from ministries and central agencies to work in close coordination with the state government to quickly supply all help required.
The Chief Secretary of West Bengal participated in the NCMC meeting by videoconference.
Senior officials from the Ministries of the Interior, Electricity, Telecommunications, Food and Public Distribution, Health, Drinking Water and Sanitation, NDMA and NDRF also attended the meeting.
