Cyclone Nisarga, which hit the coast of Maharashtra with winds of up to 120 km / h Wednesday afternoon, weakened into a “deep depression”, the Indian Meteorological Department said.

The cyclone made landfall at 12:30 p.m. near Alibaug in the Raigad district, just 95 kilometers from Mumbai. “There has been a slight change in direction to the northeast, which means that the impact of the cyclone on Mumbai was less severe than expected,” the IMD said in a statement.

Mumbai experienced moderate rainfall throughout the afternoon. The wind speed was 26 kilometers per hour. Colaba recorded 23 millimeters and Santacruz recorded 12 millimeters of rain until 4 p.m.
The weather started to clear towards evening, said IMD.
By 4 p.m., the cyclone had started to weaken with wind speeds of 90 to 100 km / h.

Two people died in Pune and one in Raigad district in cyclone-related incidents, state officials said.

Thousands of people have been evacuated to the coastal regions of Maharashtra and southern Gujarat, trains have been rescheduled, flights canceled and fishermen have had to leave the seas as the region prepares for the cyclone.
