Herat:
Taliban fighters killed up to seven Afghan commandos in a multi-hour attack on an army outpost, lawmakers and the defense ministry said Wednesday.
Assault comes as Kabul authorities accuse insurgents of stepping up attacks on security forces in recent weeks after violence fell in much of the country following a ceasefire of three days announced in May.
The Taliban attacked the army outpost in northwestern Badhis province on Tuesday.
Badghis MP Ziauddin Akazi said insurgents attacked the Bala Murghab district outpost, sparking heavy fighting that lasted about four hours.
“Most of those killed were members of commandos and special forces,” said Akazi.
He said the attack occurred when a group of commandos and special forces went to the outpost from their nearby base.
The Defense Ministry said that seven security personnel were killed and five injured in the attack.
He said security forces later repelled the Taliban attack.
The Taliban did not comment.
In a separate incident in northern Jawzjan province on Tuesday evening, a roadside bomb ripped up a rickshaw and killed six civilians, the interior ministry said.
Interior Ministry spokesman Tareq Arian said the Taliban had placed the bomb on the road.
