Sumner Redstone died Tuesday night, National Amusements said in a statement.

Sumner Redstone, who has built a media empire that includes ViacomCBS, has passed away at the age of 97, National Amusements reported Wednesday.

Redstone grew his business from a modest drive-in movie chain and maintained the company’s leadership and notoriety in the media industry for up to 80 years. In 2016, CBS announced his resignation as executive chairman amid questions about his health and mental skills.

Redstone died Tuesday night, National Amusements said in a statement.
