SpiceJet said today it is cleared to operate flights to the United States

Bombay:

Budget carrier SpiceJet today said it has been designated as an “Indian scheduled carrier” to operate flights to the United States.

SpiceJet would be the first Indian economy carrier to operate services to the United States. Currently, only the national carrier Air India operates flights on the India-United States routes.

In a regulatory filing, SpiceJet said it had been designated as India’s scheduled carrier to operate agreed services between the two countries. This was done under the Air Services Agreement between India and the United States, according to the file.

All international commercial air passenger services have been suspended since March 22, following travel restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

SpiceJet Chairman and CEO Ajay Singh said the designation as India’s scheduled carrier to operate between India and the United States would help the airline plan for its international expansion in a much better and calibrated way. .

“I have always maintained that there is an opportunity in every adversity and the current crisis situation has seen SpiceJet rise to the occasion and play a central role,” he said.

SpiceJet shares were trading at Rs 49.90, up 5.16% from its previous close on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
