The funeral of singing legend S P Balasubrahmanyam was held at his farm in Red Hills in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, about 50 km from Chennai, with full police honors. The singer, whose voice has enchanted Indian film and music fans for the past fifty years, has been honored with a 72-gun salute by Tamil Nadu police. S P Balasubrahmanyam died in a hospital in Chennai on Friday afternoon. He was 74 years old. Actor Vijay paid his final tributes to the legendary singer – he was pictured interacting with SPB’s son S P Charan with his hands folded. S P Balasubrahmanyam was the voice of actor Vijay in songs such as Oru Kaditham, Enna Azhagu and Azhagooril. Veteran director Bharathiraja, who was also in hospital last night, attended the funeral, as did singer Mano. Music composer Devi Sri Prasad and comedian Mayilsami also attended the funeral of S P Balasubrahmanyam.
A number of politicians were seen during the last rites of S P Balasubrahmanyam – AIADMK leader D Jayakumarand and Andhra Pradesh irrigation minister Anil Kumar Yadav were in attendance. On Saturday morning, elaborate security managements were carried out due to the funeral, the PTI news agency reported. Mourners flocked outside Red Hills Farm to bid farewell to SPB.

On Friday evening, SPB was taken to his Red Hills farm in Thamaraipakkam in Thiruvallur district in a hearse van, when sympathizers and emotional fans followed the vehicle to say goodbye to SPB. PTI reported that the hearse van had to slow down to allow fans to say goodbye to SPB. Prior to that, family members paid homage to S. P. Balasubrahmanyam at his residence in Nungambakkam.
S P Balasubrahmanyam is survived by his wife Savitri, his daughter Pallavi and his son S P Charan, who is a producer and singer. S P Charan, along with other family members, was spotted in hospital on Friday evening.
S P Balasubrahmanyam was admitted to Chennai MGM Healthcare Hospital for COVID-19 on August 5. The singer tested negative after a few weeks but continued to stay on a ventilator. A day before his death, the hospital announced he was being put on maximum life support. Kamal Haasan, who had worked extensively with Mr. Subhrahmanyam, went to the hospital on Thursday. After SPB’s death, social media was inundated with heartwarming tributes from Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Ilaiyaraaja, A R Rahman and several Bollywood stars.
S P Balasubrahmanyam has sung over 40,000 songs in 16 languages and won six national awards. He received the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan.
