Mumbai:
Actor Sonu Sood, who organized the transportation of stranded migrant workers in Mumbai and faced criticism from Shiv Sena for “adopting a political script written by BJP”, was arrested in front of the Bandra Terminus in Mumbai by police after meeting workers.
Mumbai police said actor was arrested by Rail Protection Forces (RPF) when he arrived at the station on Monday evening to meet workers and added that they had received no complaints to date about it.
Migrant workers were supposed to take the special Shramik train from Bandra Terminus to Uttar Pradesh.
The chief inspector of Nirmal Nagar police station in Mumbai, Shashikant Bhandare, told the PTI news agency that “the actor was arrested by the RPF, not by us. He wanted to meet workers who were on their way in their country of origin. We have not received any complaints so far. “
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday wondered if the BJP had encouraged Sonu Sood to “offer help” to migrant workers from northern India stranded in Maharashtra amidst isolation, with the political motive of portraying the government of Uddhav Thackeray in a bad light.
In his weekly column “Rokhthok” in the mouthpiece of Shiv Sena “Saamana”, Sanjay Raut questioned the sudden rise of “Mahatma” Sood on the social scene of Maharashtra during the lockout.
Raut also spoke of an alleged “sting operation” against Sonu Sood before the 2019 general election, saying he had agreed to promote the government led by the BJP on different platforms via his official social media accounts.
However, later today, Shiv Sena’s chief minister and president, Uddhav Thackeray, welcomed Sonu Sood’s initiative to organize buses for stranded migrant workers.
The actor met Uddhav Thackeray at his residence, Matoshree, in the suburbs of Bandra on Sunday evening.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday supported Sonu Sood for his work with stranded migrant workers and questioned the Maharashtra government’s criticism of the actor.
