Sikkim extends coronavirus lockdown until August 1

The Sikkim government has extended the state lockdown until August 1 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, according to a notification.

A full six-day lockdown, imposed by the hilly state, was due to end on Sunday.

“After careful consideration of the situation, it was decided to extend the lockdown period throughout the state of Sikkim until 6 a.m. on August 1, 2020,” said a notification issued by Chief Secretary SC Gupta.

The state reported its first death from COVID-19 on Sunday after a 74-year-old man died from the disease at a public hospital in Gangtok, the official said.

Sikkim has 357 active cases of COVID-19, while the total number of cases stands at 499, a senior health official said.

Up to 142 people have recovered from the disease.
