The growing crops of hundreds of hectares of fields were inundated.

Amaravati:

The standing crops of hundreds of hectares of fields were inundated as the Krishna River saw a flood of more than seven cusecs lakh in Vijayawada on Monday.

The lanka villages on either side of the river, downstream from the Prakasam dam, in Krishna and Guntur districts were stranded when the flooding peaked at 7.03 lakh cusecs during the day before retreating slightly.

Four teams from the National Disaster Response Force and one from the SDRF were dispatched to different divisions of the two districts to deal with any eventuality, although several affected families were moved to relief camps from flooded villages. .

Information Minister Perni Venkataramaiah provided an update and said they were closely monitoring the flood and had taken all measures to ensure the safety of people.

“The flooding is expected to gradually recede, but we have fully prepared the district administration to help those affected,” the minister said.

As the village streams remained swollen due to the heavy rains, coupled with the flood flow in the river, the road communication network remained cut, especially between Vijayawada and Amaravati.

The Kondaveeti Vagu elevator irrigation system was first implemented to drain flood water into the river just behind the Prakasam dam.

LIS aimed to prevent flooding of the Amaravati capital region. Kolluru villages and Kollipara mandals in the Tenali revenue division of Guntur district were flooded.

In Krishna district, the mandals Thotlavalluru, Nagayalanka, Avanigadda, Mopidevi, Challapalli and Ghantasala were affected.

Most of the cash crops and legumes that were widely grown during this period in Krishna and Guntur districts were affected by the floods.

Sugarcane, banana, turmeric, papaya, yam, redgram and Bengal gram were the most affected.
