Shyam Singh Rana said he left the party with the issue of farmers in mind.

Chandigarh:

Haryana BJP leader Shyam Singh Rana resigned from the party on Wednesday due to recently passed agricultural laws.

The former Radaur MP in Yamunanagar district has tendered his resignation to BJP head of state Om Prakash Dhankar.

Mr Rana, who was chief parliamentary secretary during the first term of the BJP government led by ML Khattar, said he was leaving the party with the issue of farmers in mind.

In his resignation letter to Dhankar, Mr. Rana said, considering the problems faced by the farmers, “I support them and resign from all the positions I hold and also resign from the party”.

Subsequently, speaking to reporters in Yamunanagar, he said the problem of the farmers was not resolved. He said thousands of farmers were protesting against farm laws.

Mr Rana said farmers’ fears over the new farm laws were not without merit.

“The government should have created avenues for farmers by improving the existing system. Farmers’ concerns are real and the government should have addressed them,” he said.

He also claimed that a large number of farmers in the state had faced difficulties in supplying crops for the past few days, but the government has not paid sufficient attention to the issue.

When asked if he would join another team, Mr Rana said he would consult with his supporters before taking the next step.

Haryana BJP leaders Parminder Singh Dhull and Rampal Majra also recently called the Centre’s agricultural reforms “anti-farmer”, saying apprehensions about the minimum support price must be addressed.

Two MPs from the Jannayak Janta (JJP) party, which is part of the ruling BJP-led coalition in Haryana, also participated in protests against agricultural reforms.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday gave his assent to the three contentious bills – the Agricultural Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020; the Agreement on Price Insurance and Agricultural Services of Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Bill, 2020; and the Essential Products (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
