Famous filmmaker Shekhar Kapur was appointed chairman of the Pune Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) company and chairman of the institute’s board on Tuesday, an official said. FTII Director Bhupendra Kainthola said Shekhar Kapur’s appointment was announced by the Union’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The 74-year-old filmmaker’s tenure will last until March 3, 2023, the official said. Born December 6, 1945 in Lahore, Pakistan, the critically acclaimed director and actor is known for films like Elizabeth (1998), Bandit queen (1994) and The four feathers (2002).
Shekhar Kapur directed the 1983 film Masoom, with Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Urmila Matondkar.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted: “Happy to announce that renowned international film personality Shekhar Kapur has been appointed President of the FTII Company and Chairman of the FTII Board of Directors. Kapur, who has extensive experience, will add more value to the institute. I am sure that everyone will be delighted with his appointment, ”he added.
“The Indian government appoints Shri Shekhar Kapur as president of the FTII Society and chairman of the board of directors of the FTII until March 3, 2023,” the order from the I&B ministry said, tweeted by Prakash Javadekar.
After Bollywood actor Anupam Kher resigned as president of the first institute in October 2018, B P Singh, producer and director of the popular television series CID, was appointed President of the FTII Society and Chairman of the Board in December 2018.
