Hong Kong:
Seven people were killed and several others were injured when a fire ravaged an apartment in Hong Kong on Sunday, the deadliest fire to hit the financial center in nearly a decade.
The Government Information Service said 17 victims were taken to hospital after the fire broke out in the Jordan district shortly after 8:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. GMT). Seven died while seven others were listed as being in critical condition.
Live TV footage showed paramedics and firefighters frantically trying to perform chest compression on unconscious victims on the street outside the building.
The South China Morning Post said the blaze was the worst since a fire in 2011 that killed nine people.
Hong Kong has some of the most densely populated and tallest apartment buildings in the world.
Deadly fires were a regular plague, especially in the poorest neighborhoods.
But over the past few decades, security measures have intensified and these fires have become much less common.
