New Delhi:
Railways Council Chairman VK Yadav said on Tuesday that satellite tracking of trains had improved the efficiency of rail operations amid a coronavirus pandemic.
“Satellite train tracking has improved the efficiency of train operations: around 6,500 locomotives (electric and diesel) are already equipped with the global positioning system (GPS), around 6,000 locomotives will be equipped by December 2021 ”, tweeted the Ministry of Railways.
In the midst of the pandemic, railways have increased freight loading traffic as well as the average speed of freight trains.
“Freight loading was 3.13 million tonnes on July 27, which is higher than last year for the same date,” the railroads said in a statement.
The average speed of freight trains in July is 45.03 km / h, roughly double compared to last year for the same month (23.22 km / h).
Earlier today, Trade Union Minister Piyush Goyal said the railways were making progress in improving freight transportation.
“Following on from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives to make railways the ‘growth engine of the Indian economy’, Indian railways are becoming synonymous with fast, efficient and economical transport of goods in India,” tweeted the Minister of Railways.
