Mungeli:
Three family members and a sanitation worker died on Tuesday after inhaling toxic gases from a septic tank in Mhateli district of Chhattisgarh, police said.
The incident took place in the village of Marrakona, in the Sargaon Nagar Panchayat region, said a police official.
Sanitation workers were called to clean a septic tank at Mansharam Kaushik’s house, he said.
A member of the Kaushik family was looking inside after cleaning the tank when he passed out and fell.
Two other family members went down to the tank to save it, but did not go out. One of the sanitation workers entered but he too fell unconscious, said the official.
The villagers informed the police who recovered the four bodies after considerable efforts.
The victims were identified as Akhileshwar Kaushik (40), Gaurishankar Kaushik (28), Ramkhilawan Kaushik (45) and the sanitation worker Subhash Dagaur (35).
“At first glance, it appears that they died after inhaling toxic gases inside the septic tank,” said the police official, adding that a case had been registered and that a more was in progress.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel expressed his sorrow over the incident and asked the district administration to provide all possible assistance to the families of the victims.
