New Delhi:
Bail requests for actor Rhea Chakraborty and his brother Showik, jailed for nearly three weeks on drug-related charges linked to the Sushant Singh Rajput investigation, to be heard by the Bombay High Court today. Five other defendants, including employees of Sushant Singh Rajput, are also asking for bail.
Rhea Chakraborty, who was dating movie star Sushant Singh Rajput, was arrested on September 9 for organizing drugs for him.
On Monday, the Narcotics Control Bureau submitted a statement opposing the release on bail of Rhea Chakraborty and her brother, saying they were buying drugs not for their own use but to supply them to Sushant Singh Rajput, which is “a more serious offense” related to drug financing.
“Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, this is the most serious crime,” Narcotics Control Bureau official Sameer Wankhede said in his brief.
Rhea Chakraborty also used her home to buy and store drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput, the officer said, claiming she was therefore guilty of “harboring drugs”.
The agency also said it had electronic evidence in the form of WhatsApp chats to prove Rhea Chakraborty was involved in the illegal financing of drugs. On September 9, the bureau described the 28-year-old actor as an “active member of a drug union.”
At the previous bail hearing last week, Rhea Chakraborty challenged the jurisdiction of the Narcotics Control Board and said the CBI should take over as it was mandated by the Supreme Court to investigate the case. all aspects of the case. In response, the anti-drug agency said it had the right to investigate the drug case related to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput.
Rhea Chakraborty’s bail application alleges a witch hunt by the Narcotics Control Bureau at the behest of three central agencies without any evidence. She also alleges that Sushant Singh Rajput “took advantage of his relatives to support his drug addiction” and that he “was the only drug user and ordered his staff to obtain his drugs”.
Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found dead in his Mumbai apartment on June 14. Mumbai Police launched an investigation into the suicide, but weeks after the actor’s family filed a complaint accusing his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty of mentally harassing him, taking money from his accounts and gambling role in his death, the investigation was entrusted to the CBI. The Narcotics Control Bureau intervened when WhatsApp chats retrieved from Rhea Chakraborty’s phone revealed conversations involving drugs.
The investigation widened into a drug and Bollywood hunt in which prominent actors Deepika Padukone, Shraddha Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan were also interviewed.
