Chandigarh:
The teaching fraternity and the opposition parties firmly condemned on Thursday the authorities’ decision to replace government teachers for bringing foreign returnees from the airport to the quarantine centers for coronaviruses.
Describing it as an “irrational and illogical” decision, the teachers’ association and the political parties – the SAD, its ally BJP and the AAP – asked for the decision to be annulled.
“Teachers in Ludhiana’s government have been asked to bring foreign returnees from the airport and then take them to quarantine centers. We strongly condemn this decision,” said the president of the Democratic Teachers’ Front (Punjab), Davinder Singh Punia.
Previous teachers were dispatched to the distilleries and breweries of Gurdaspur to verify the supply of alcohol and to monitor illegal mining in Phagwara. However, these two decisions were withdrawn after criticism from teachers and opposition parties.
Responding to the latest ordinance, Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker Aman Arora said it reflected a “negative attitude” from the state government toward education and teachers.
“Earlier, teachers were dispatched to distilleries to verify the illegal supply of alcohol, work that could not be done by the police and excise services. Subsequently, they were deputies to verify the illegal mining.
“And now, under a new order, teachers have been asked to bring the NRIs from the airports to the quarantine centers,” said Mr. Arora.
“Teachers have a responsibility to make the future of students. At a time when teachers are teaching online, their replacement for a position other than teaching reflects the government’s negative attitude towards teaching and teachers, “said the MP for Sunam.
“This irrational and illogical decision must be withdrawn,” said Arora.
BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh also criticized the government.
“This shows that this is a misguided government. It does not know what work should be done by teachers who teach students,” said Chugh.
Shiromani Akali Dal spokesman and senior executive Daljit Singh Cheema said the government should withdraw the order.
