New Delhi:
India is determined to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of “unilateralism and aggression,” Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said today, as the standoff with China in the east of Ladakh enters the seventh month.
The defense minister also said that India attaches importance to the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and is committed to respecting various agreements signed for the maintenance of peace along the borders.
“However, India is determined to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of unilateralism and aggression,” he said during a speech at a virtual seminar hosted by National Defense Middle School.
Rajnath Singh stressed that India is a peace loving country and believes that differences should not turn into conflicts.
The standoff between India and China began on May 6 and strained their ties considerably. The two sides held a series of diplomatic and military talks to resolve the conflict. However, no progress has been made to end the impasse.
The eighth round of corps commander-level talks between India and China will likely take place tomorrow.
In his remarks, the Minister of Defense also referred to efforts to bolster India’s military prowess and boost domestic defense production.
“Peace can only be achieved through the ability to deter war; we have tried to strengthen deterrence through capacity building and indigenization,” said Rajnath Singh.
Regarding Pakistan, the defense minister said he continued to be “adamant” in using terrorism as state policy.
