Doha:
Qatar said on Friday that those responsible for the invasive gynecological searches of female passengers at Doha airport had been fired on charges of “violations.”
Women on 10 flights from Doha were screened as authorities searched for the mother of a newborn baby found abandoned in an airport toilet on October 2.
“Those responsible for these violations and unlawful actions have been brought to the prosecution,” the government’s Communications Office said in a statement.
“The Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior have expressed the most sincere apologies from the Government of the State of Qatar for what some female travelers have suffered as a result of these measures.
New Zealand said Thursday evening that one of its citizens was among the women subjected to the invasive examinations, calling the action “totally unacceptable”.
The incident happened in early October, but was not revealed until this week after affected Australian passengers spoke out.
Australia has since said 13 of its citizens had to undergo the “appalling” exams, Britain has said it is supporting two women and AFP has learned that a Frenchwoman was also affected.
