Chandigarh:
The Punjab and Haryana High Court denounced the Punjab police for using a racist insult while referring to an African national in police documents.
The single judge bench of Judge Rajiv Narain Raina asked the Director General of Punjab Police to notify the instructions to ensure that the offensive terms are not used when referring to blacks.
Judge Raina said he was “dismayed” to find a derogatory term used when referring to an African national in Challan’s section 173 documents (Police report after ‘investigation) of the Code of Criminal Procedure before the Court of First Instance in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 (NDPS).
“It is a very offensive word around the world and no one has any reason to use it, let alone the police. Therefore, it is ordered never to use the word unprintable in any police document, including in challans or elsewhere on case documents, particularly in investigation reports, “said the judge in his June 12 order.
“It shames India and hates the country,” said the judge.
