New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the keynote address for World India Week 2020 – which will be attended by 5,000 participants from more than 30 countries – at 1:30 p.m. today. Billed as one of India’s largest international events on globalization, the three-day virtual event — on the theme “Be the Renewal: India and a Better World” – should help the economy emerging from the shadow of the coronavirus.
About 250 speakers will speak at the virtual meeting on geopolitics, business, technology, banking and finance, the pharmaceutical industry, defense and security, and the arts and culture.
“Will be addressing World India Week, hosted by @IndiaIncorp at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. This forum will bring together global thought leaders and industry captains to discuss aspects of opportunity in India as well as the global economic recovery after COVID, “said the Prime Minister, who is expected to connect with industry leaders and present the many investment opportunities that India has to offer.
Other high-level speakers present at the meeting will include colleagues from the Prime Minister’s Office – Minister of Foreign Affairs S Jaishankar, Minister of Trade and Industry Piyush Goyal. In addition, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir GC Murmu, the founder of the Isha Sadhguru Foundation and spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar are also expected to speak.
Speakers from abroad will include British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab and Interior Minister Priti Patel, American Ambassador to India Ken Juster and others, the Prime Minister’s office said in a statement.
It will also present an unprecedented performance “Atmanirbhar Bharat” by Madhu Nataraj and a special concert for the 100th anniversary in honor of the maestro of sitar Ravi Shankar by three of his most eminent students, said the office of the Prime Minister.
The coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown to contain it has ravaged the global economy. The World Bank predicted on Monday that the world economy would contract by 5.2% this year – the sharpest slowdown since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
“The speed and depth with which it struck suggests the possibility of a slow recovery that may force policy makers to consider additional interventions,” said World Bank President David Malpass.
In April, the International Monetary Fund had projected India’s growth rate to 1.9% for 2020. According to her, the world economy should shrink by 3%. India will rebound in 2021 with a robust growth rate of 6%, said the IMF.
